Golden Paste and Golden Milk Tea
Golden Milk Tea, sometimes referred to as only golden milk, is an ancient way of experiencing the benefits of turmeric with helpful fat included. While there are many recipes for golden milk, they usually involve dissolving a paste of turmeric and water into a small cup of milk and coconut oil. It is best to use high-quality organic turmeric in the milk preparation. The paste can be prepared in advance and kept in the refrigerator for a few weeks.
Other ways to get the most out of your turmeric:
- Sprinkle some on an avocado
- Dissolve it in a tablespoon of coconut oil before adding it to a smoothie
- Stir it into olive oil and then toss in fresh vegetables
- Consume turmeric or curcumin with black pepper. “Adding black pepper to turmeric or turmeric-spiced food enhances curcumin’s bioavailability by 1,000 times, due to black pepper’s hot property called piperine,” says nutritionist Stacy Kennedy.

This is the Number One Golden Paste (GP) recipe that has been tried and tested by thousands of TUG users across the globe. This recipe may be used for humans as well as animals.
- 1/2 cup (125 ml/60gm) turmeric powder
- 1 cup water (250 ml) PLUS 1 cup water in reserve, if needed
- 1/3 cup (70 ml) Raw/Cold Pressed/Unrefined Coconut/Flaxseed-Linseed Oil, Virgin/Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 2 - 3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
Please Note: the amount of pepper added has been adjusted on Doug English’s recommendations.

- Omit pepper if you cannot tolerate it. The absorption of turmeric will still be improved by cooking the paste AND by the inclusion of oil, BUT remember it will be less effective without the pepper.
- Place turmeric and water in pan, stirring over gentle heat until you have a thick paste. This should take about 7-10 minutes and you may need to add additional water along the way.
- Add the freshly ground pepper and oil AT THE END of cooking. Stir well (a whisk is ideal) to incorporate the oil and allow to cool.
- The Golden Paste will keep for 2 weeks, refrigerated
- Freeze a portion if you think you have too much to use within two weeks.
- Use for Golden Milk, Smoothies, stir into Yogurt, add to your dinner plate as a condiment.
- Can be put into your pet’s food as well.
A good alternative to expensive supplements. Take one frozen tablet of GP during meals. Make the GP and then freeze it into pill-size quantities.

- Ensure that if you’re taking turmeric pills regularly that they are a capsule that contains turmeric powder, rather than a high dosage of curcumin (which is extracted from turmeric).

As a Drink
By far the most popular option appears to be adding GP to the drink of your choice. Here are a few more popular suggestions:
- Create Golden milk
- Turmeric Tea (and adding some extra ginger)
- Freshly Juiced Tomato Juice and a spoonful of GP
- In a smoothie and add your superfoods, fruits and vegetables – and try to avoid sweeteners. Give it a good blitz and you are away because it’s a meal in itself.
- In a Broth. Create some stock and pop in the GP. Warm and tasty.
- ·With fermented drinks such as Kombucha or Kefir. These drinks are full of healthy probiotics and recognized as being beneficial for digestion and gut health. Just add your GP
- Orange Juice – some even suggest heating it to help with the flavour. Make sure that your orange juice is freshly squeezed and not store-bought
Golden Milk Recipe
- 1 tsp. fresh ground turmeric (or 1/2 tsp. dried)
- 1/4 tsp. fresh ground ginger (or 1/8th tsp. dried)
- 1 tsp. cinnamon Large pinch of black pepper
- Honey to taste (optional - add only once the GM has cooled)
- 1 tsp. coconut oil
- 2 cups unsweetened home-made almond milk

- Place all ingredients in a small saucepan.
- Gently heat over medium low flame,
- whisking until all the ingredients have come together and the milk is heated through.
- You can use any milk you prefer, just note, if you use a milk with fat in it, such as coconut milk, you can eliminate the coconut oil.
- Makes 2 servings.

In your Food
- Soups and Stews are a popular option as the flavour of GP is readily absorbed and tend not to dominate the final flavour.
- As a Salad Dressing – add some GP to olive oil and some raw Apple Cider Vinegar and you have a tangy dressing to spice up your lettuce leaves.
- In Curries and Stir Fries – the Asian diet is a terrific accompaniment to turmeric (or is it the other way around) and the message is don’t forget to add GP to your sauce!
- With Eggs – scrambled, omelettes and devilled – all are popular choices with some GP added for some extra flavouring. Check with your DBM Physician if permitted
- In plain goat’s yoghurt. A teaspoon of GP with a tablespoon (or 2) of natural (unsweetened) yoghurt. One may add a dash of honey to taste (optional). Check with your DBM Physician if permitted
